It is known that epilepsy influences sleep, and that sleep influences epilepsy. In addition, the treatment of epilepsy can have favorable effects on sleep, and the sleep disorders that occur concomitantly with epilepsy have profound effects on seizure frequency and severity, primarily through the sleep deprivation process.

With recent advances in epilepsy research, the availability of more modern techniques (particularly digital sleep and EEG recordings), and the acceptance of this specialty as a significant area for both clinicians and for basic research scientists, this is the appropriate time for a comprehensive textbook.
